It is no longer news that crude all is not enough to sustain the economy of Nigeria. Even before the advent of Covid-19 oil prices have been dwindling. This is because some countries have discovered alternatives to crude oil (solar, electricity and oil from certain seeds) and have looked away from crude oil thereby making the demands less attractive.
The next alternative to oil in terms of revenue generation is Agriculture. And there is no alternative to farming business the world is going to be high demand for food, an opportunity we need to grap. Instead for Agriculture to dwindle in business, it will rather accelerate this is because of our growing population. We were yet to come to terms with this when covid-19 came and further expand the reasons why we should quickly engage more in Agriculture sector.
Some scholars have predicted food shortage and hunger that will arise as an aftermath of covid-19, infact an average person knows this, especially, when you add one and one together,. It is very clear to the blind and loud to the deaf. As such, every organisation should start doing something about it; Government, Private and Individuals, whether in small scale or larger scale. Government should be able to encourage farmers and interested persons to engage in farming especially now that we are in raining season. It is not enough to tell farmers to go back to the farms without providing enabling environment for them, such as;
- Providing seeds not just any seed but quality seeds such as, hybrid seeds.
- Mechanization; farms that are large should be mechanized to encourage people to grow large farms
- provision of fertilizers
- Money for Miscellaneous
- Above all, provide protection for farms and farmers.
Just as I was about to post this article I read a news from Premium Times that 81,000 tons of seed are available for distribution to farmers, impressive! As Oliver twist more should be done to encourage many persons to join farming. By the way do you know that, the next generation of billionaires will be majorly farmers. As if it was not happening before I mean majorly not sparingly. Think about this and start farming today.
