An Overview Of NIFOR

NIFOR simply stands for Nigerian Institute for Oil-Palm Research (NIFOR). NIFOR is that oil palm research institute that enjoys substantial international standing as a major world centre in oil palm research. This institute’s achievements and reputation derive from it’s highly trained scientific staff, a well established experimental station infrastructure with functional facilities and a tradition of scholarship and relevant research.

The executive director of the Nigerian Institute for Oil & Palm Research is Dr Celestine E. Ikuenobe. Dr Celestine holds a Ph. D in Agronomy from the University of Ibadan. He remains a seasoned Agronomist in Oil Palm, Coconut, Date, Raphia and Shea tree Plantation Agriculture. Dr Celestine E. Ikuenobe research interest covers weed, biology and management, also plant nutrient and soil moisture management, he is a national expert on all mandate crops of NIFOR and widely published in International and local scientific journal. He also is an editor to numerous international journals.

HISTORY

The Nigeria Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) was established in 1939, after series of West African Agricultural conferences by then Colonial Department of Agriculture, 1927, 1930 and 1938. There was an agreed resolution to the effect that research on crops should be regionalized and be carried out in it’s appropriate region.

In 1964, the Nigeria component was renamed Nigeria Institute for Oil Palm Research and in the same year, the institute mandate was increased and widened to include coconut, raphia, date palm and some skeletal works on mostly coconut to understand the coconut pest and diseases, coconut nutrition.

In 1967 the problems associated with date palm led to the inclusion of research on date palm in her mandate and by 1970 full operation fully started and in 1962, the control of the institute was moved to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.

Oil palm cultivation generally is originated from Western Africa which is located in a tropical area but currently grown throughout Africa, Asia, North America, and South America, but now currently, Nigeria palm oil production accounts for 7% of total global output.

You should know that in Nigeria, the major oil palm producing states include Enugu, Imo, Ondo, Edo, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, Oyo, Abia and Ogun State.
The only branch of the Nigeria Institute for Oil Palm Research is in Benin City, Edo State.
