For the record, the rice producing states in Northern Nigeria are Kebbi, Borno, Kano and Kaduna states respectively. In the Southern region of the country, Enugu, Ebonyi state and Cross River while rice is produced in Taraba and Benue for the middle belt region.

Most farmers produce one rice crop each year, but some have made irrigation channels which allow them harvert in the year. This allows them to plant seedlings when there is less danger or pests. The use of Organic fertilizers though, is time consuming and is not widespread; many farmers resign themselves to buying fertilisers which they consider to expensive. One the fields have enough water the rice grows quickly with some varieties reaching maturity within three months.

The processing of rice generally takes place away from the farm. After the rice is been parboiled, It is laid out on Tarpaulines to dry. It is at this stage that there is a danger of small stones getting mixied up with the rice grains, reducing its marketability

Investing in rice production is one of the most lucrative agricultural business one can ever do. As population increases, so does the demand for rice also increase. From findings, Nigerians consume about 5.5 million tons of rice annually and 3.6 million tons arr locally produced.  This shows that our local production is far below our consumption of the product.   • As a processor, you can make lots of money from the rice industry is by being a processor. You don’t have to be a farmer to be a processor, all you have to do is to reach out to farmers who are willing to sell their rice, buy from them and go on to process it yourself, package it and sell for profit
  • As a distributor, the third way you can get involved in the highly lucrative rice industry, you buy in bulk from the processor, locate markets and sell them at a higher price.
