There are so many mistakes one can make as an NYSC member that can in turn mar ones future. Here are some of the mistakes you should avoid as an NYSC member:

1. SPENDING LAVISHLY

One of the worst mistakes one can make as an NYSC member is spending lavishly. There are so many people that think that only they get to the stage of the NYSC, they have made it in life and they start spending recklessly. This is a totally wrong mentality. The future is around the corner and spending lavishly without even considering the future is not the way to go.

Even with the little money paid as allowance, you should be able to save at least a small amount that can help you start something without leaving you bizarre when you are done with the program.

2. LACKADAISICAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS WORK

Another terrible mistake that can be made by an NYSC member is lackadaisical attitude towards work. This particular problem is quite common with people they have posted to serve in schools. Because they may not get extra pay from the schools unlike those that serve in big firms, they do not take what they are doing seriously and of course, this type of attitude can make them miss so many life changing opportunities.

It is important to note that whatever is worth doing is worth doing well. You can never tell what would come out of it.

3. ISOLATION

Isolation as well is another big mistake that one can make as an NYSC member. Well, some people would call this shyness but I would call it isolation which means staying away from other people or the outside world in general. There are many people that find comfort being alone and they even take this attitude to the NYSC programme. Many of them turn out to regret this as they eventually find out that they did not network with people that would have brought some opportunities to them later in life.

4. INFLUENCING WHERE ONE WOULD BE POSTED

Another big mistake that can make by an NYSC member is influencing where one would be posted. For me, I do not like it when people influence where there would be posted to seek bigger opportunities. By doing this, they end up spending so much money and then even find out later and get disappointed that nothing actually came out from such arrangement and have at this time already lost so much money.

5. FORGETTING TO CARRY ID CARDS AROUND

Another terrible mistake that can be made by an NYSC member is forgetting to carry ID cards around. ID card is a means of proper identification of an individual. There are so many NYSC members that have gotten into one trouble or the other because of this singular forgetful act.

6. NOT THINKING ABOUT THE FUTURE

Another terrible mistake that can be made by an NYSC member is not thinking about the future. A lot of NYSC member do not even know what they want to achieve in life and are just living life as it breaks. This should not be so; this is the path that leads to failure and poverty in life. It is during the days of NYSC that one would be able to master the act of living for the future. Therefore, it should always be at the back of your mind.

7. NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SKILL ACQUISITION CLASSES (SAED)

Another big mistake that can be made by an NYSC member is not taking advantage of skill acquisition classes (SAED). It is a very good idea for one to at least learn a skill in Nigeria because getting a job after the NYSC program is not certain.

8. NOT GRABBING AVAILABLE OPPORTUNITIES

Another terrible mistake that can be made by an NYSC member is not grabbing available opportunities. There are a lot of people that are limited to the course they had studied while in school and this in turn makes them myopic only waiting for opportunities from that particular sector. If you want to be successful in life, you must learn to multi task. Grab every opportunity that presents itself to you because opportunities come but once.

9. FILLED WITH THOUGHTS OF PLEASING THE OPPOSITE GENDER ONLY

Another mistake that can be made by an NYSC that can be regretted for a life time is having thoughts of pleasing the opposite gender only. Many people come to NYSC programme with different mindset. One of the most common is pleasing the opposite gender. Bear it in mind that the future is only a stone throw away and getting into unbefitting sexual activities with the opposite gender can mar your bright future.
