Top Problems Of Engineering Practice In Nigeria

1.     IMPROPER FUNDING FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

One of the major problems that have faced many sectors in Nigeria today is improper funding. One the part of engineering, it is not just improper funding but improper funding for research and development. For a country to be able to properly advance in technology, it is important that researches are conducted to address the problem, these researches are conducted in other foreign countries and are also funded by the government but in Nigeria, there is no proper funding for conducting research and development of technology.

Many Nigerians have the ideas and just need the fund to be able to research for technological breakthrough, this is the reason it feels like Nigeria is technologically backwards compared to other countries of the world.

2.     LACK OF PROPER EQUIPMENT

Another problem facing the practice of engineering in Nigeria is lack of proper equipment. It is no more news that most of the equipment we have in Nigeria both in the universities and other engineering organizations are not up to date and they are also badly maintained. There is no way there would be much improvement technological wise in the country.

Personally, I think the government is not doing a good job in providing and maintaining equipment in its universities. Much equipment we see in the university has been there right from when that university was founded. There should be an upgrade.

3.     LACK OF COMPETENT TRAINED PERSONNEL IN TEACHING

Another problem facing the practice of engineering in Nigeria is the lack of competent trained personnel in teaching. This problem is one of biggest faced in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The fact that some of the lecturers or teachers are not properly grounded in what they ought to be to be able to pass knowledge to the students. Some lecturers might be grounded in practice and not in theory and vice versa. This shouldn’t be so.

4.     LACK OF PROPERLY TRAINED PERSONNEL IN FIELD WORK

Another problem facing the practice of engineering in Nigeria is the lack of properly trained personnel in field work. I have had series of cases of people that have graduated from higher institutions but they are not properly grounded in the skills required for engineering. Many of them must have just been loaded with the theory of engineering in the university leaving them bizarre when they come in contact with a real life situation or a workshop.

5.     NO MUCH RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE

Another problem facing the practice of engineering in Nigeria is the fact that there is no much relationship between theory and practice. This problem has actually been here for ages. You would find out that there is no proper coming together of the theory and practice of engineering in Nigeria. This of course is problem as it makes them to keep reinventing the wheel instead of having creative ideas and bringing them to a reality.

We have had cases of some engineers in training doing more of theory than practical and also some doing more of practical than theory. This shouldn’t be so if we want to grow technologically because no system can grow this way.

6.     LACK OF PROPER PRACTICAL FOR STUDENTS IN TRAINING

Another problem facing the practice of engineering in Nigeria is the lack of proper practical for students in training. I have heard cases of incompetent graduate engineers. Why? This is basically because they were not properly trained with practical while they were still in training. They are then disappointed when they actually graduate and have to face a real life situation and they have no idea on what to do. Engineering isn’t a thing to joke with; therefore, to be able to have more competent engineers, there should be proper practical for students in training.

7.     NO GOVERNMENT POLICY TO SUPPORT NIGERIAN ENGINEERING COMPANIES

Another problem facing the practice of engineering in Nigeria is the fact that there is no government policy to support Nigerian engineering companies. The Nigerian government does not make engineering a priority which is the reason why we do not even have a proper government policy that would be able to support Nigerian engineering companies.

8.     LITTLE OR NO EMPLOYMENT FOR THE WOMEN

Another problem facing the practice of engineering in Nigeria is little or no employment for the women. The fact that many engineering companies in Nigeria do not favor women when it comes to employment has put the ladies off the part of engineering over the years. Many at times, they feel these ladies are not properly trained or as weak people. This should not be so if we want to move up to a standard of a technological advance country.
