Origin/History Of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is one of three Universities set up in Nigeria somewhere in the range of 1961 and 1962 because of the report submitted to the Federal Government in September, 1960, by a Commission it designated in April 1959 under the Chairmanship of Sir Eric Ashby, Master of Clare College, Cambridge, to overview the necessities of post-auxiliary and advanced education in Nigeria throughout the following twenty years. On eighth June, 1961 the Law accommodating the foundation of the Provisional Council of the University was officially introduced under the Chairmanship of Chief Rotimi Williams.
On eleventh June, 1970, an Edict known as the University of Ife decree, 1970 was proclaimed by the Government of the Western State to supplant the Provisional Council Law of eighth June, 1961. This Edict has since been revised by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (Amended) Edict No. 112 of 1975 (Transitional Provisions) Decree No.
23 of 1975. This new Decree affected a takeover of the Obafemi Awolowo University by the Federal Military Government and set up a Provisional Council as a break administering body of the University which will expose to the general bearing of the Head of the Federal Government, control the approaches and funds of the University and deal with its issues. This Provisional Council has since been supplanted by a Governing Council.
The University began with five Faculties – Agriculture, Arts, Economics and Social investigations (presently Social Sciences), Law and Science. Six new Faculties have since been included, in particular the Faculty of Education (built up on first October, 1967), the Faculty of Pharmacy (set up on first October, 1969), the Faculties Technology and Health Sciences (presently College of Health Sciences) (both set up on first October, 1960), Faculty of Administration with impact from first October 1979) and Faculty of Environmental Design and Management (set up on April 6, 1982).
