One of the biggest mistakes students make in their first year is making social life affect their academics. Students get really distracted and overwhelmed with social activities in their first year and this in turn really affect their academics. Some people even attend all the social activities organized in school, this mistake is a very costly one and should be avoided.

2. GIVING ROOM FOR RANDOM DISTRACTIONS

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is giving room for random distractions.  There are different types of distractions one may experience in the higher institutions, if they are not properly managed, it can affect your academic life. For instance, you can be distracted by religious activities, or political activities. I’m not saying these things aren’t good but you should learn to control them

3. SKIPPING CLASSES

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is skipping classes. A lot of students skip classes for no serious reason. As a matter of fact, there are many things the teacher discusses in class that would aid your knowledge in a particular course. There is no point of skipping any class except on emergencies.

4. FAILURE TO READ BEFORE EXAM PERIOD

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is failure to read before exam period. We know very well that a lot of students do not make reading a priority in their first year and only do so when its very close to the examination period. This is very bad as it can negatively affect your CGPA.

5. GOING TO NIGHT CLASS WITH FRIENDS

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is going yo night class with friends.  Night class is a sort of general reading room at night. In as much as you would want to make the best out of the night from reading, you should avoid going to night class with friends. Reading at night isn’t even the best time because you should rest after a stressed up day but going with friends will even make it worse as you guys might just end up talking till morning.

6. MAKING DRESSING A PRIORITY

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is making dressing a priority. All through my years in school, i discovered that almost every student had to deal with the problem of over dressing. This is not the reason you’re in school and it should not be given the greatest priority.

7. NOT TAKING GENERAL STUDIES COURSES SERIOUSLY

Another biggest mistake mistakes students make in their first year is not taking general studies courses seriously. Many students underestimate general studies courses because it has little effect on their CGPA. It is important you note that as little as these courses seem, they can prevent you from graduating when you should.

8. MAKING FRIENDS WITH EVERY DICK AND HARRY

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is making friends with every dick and harry. Many too many friends in your first year at school can ruin your academics. You should pick the kind of friends you want to be with as it will go a long way in determining your academic excellence. Too many friends can also serve as multiple distractions for you as you would want to be here and there always pleasing them.

9. NOT DOING THE NECESSARY REGISTRATIONS ON TIME

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is not doing the necessary registrations on time. This can mar your whole effort in school the whole time. You should do the necessary registrations when you should so as not to experience problems as years run by.

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is reading hard but not reading smart. I have had a lot of people that read for long hours and yet, this does not even show on their CGPA. This means that they are reading hard but not reading smart. Reading smart implies that you make use of different strategies to aid your understanding in different courses. Avoid wasting so much time struggling to read hard but learn to read smart.

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is making relationships a priority. Many students make the mistake of making relationships a pirority instead of their academics. They most times get heart broken when its a little to late to start focusing on their academics.

12. STAYING OUTSIDE CAMPUS TOO EARLY

Another biggest mistake students make in their first year is staying outside campus too early. Personally, i feel its better staying on campus in your first year and then choosing to moving outside campus afterwards. You get the chance to familiarize with the school environs so you do not get to be distracted by the outside world.
