Nigeria attained independence in the year 1960 and ever since then has had a number of presidents and heads of state. Many Nigerians do not even know some of the past presidents, to this end; I have prepared a valid list of all the Nigerian presidents that have ruled Nigeria from when it gained independence 1960 till date.

2. Johnson Aguyi Ironsi

7. Major-General Muhammadu Buhari

Major General Muhammadu Buhari GCFR was born 17 December 1942. he is a retired general of the Nigerian Army and he also served as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.

8. General Ibrahim Babangida

General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida KGCB GCFR was born 17 August 1941. He is popularly known as IBB, General Ibrahim Babangida is a Nigerian general and statesman that served as military President of Nigeria from 1985 until his resignation in 1993. It should be noted that he also served as the Chief of Army Staff from January 1984 to August 1985. General Ibrahim Babangida played an important role in Nigerian politics.

9. Ernest Shonekan

Oloye Ernest Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan was born 9 May 1936 is a Nigerian statesman, lawyer and businessman that was appointed as the interim president of Nigeria by general Ibrahim Babangida on 26 August 1993.

General Sani Abacha GCFR was born on 20 September 1943 . He died on 8 June 1998. General Sani Abacha was a Nigerian military general, and a dictator who served as the military head of state of Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998.

11. General Abdulsalami Abubakar

General Abdulsalami Abubakar was born on June 13, 1942. General Abdulsalami Abubakar is a Nigerian statesman and military general who served as the de facto President of Nigeria from 1998 to 1999. General Abdulsalami Abubaka was also the Chief of Defence Staff between 1993 to 1998. He succeeded General Sani Abacha when he died.

13. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was born on16 August 1951. He died on 5 May 2010. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua was a Nigerian politician who was the President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010. He was declared the winner of the controversial Nigerian presidential election that was held on 21 April 2007, and he was sworn in on 29 May 2007. He died while in power.

He lost the 2015 presidential election to former military head of state General Muhammadu Buhari, who is currently the president of Nigeria. This marks the first time in the history of Nigeria that an incumbent president lost re-election and accepted defeat. Before that, he had served as the Vice President of Nigeria from 2007 to 2010; and also in a state rich in oil ” Bayelsa State” as the Governor of Bayelsa State from 2005 to 2007.

Muhammadu Buhari GCFR was born on 17 December 1942. Muhammadu Buhari is a Nigerian politician who has been president of Nigeria since 2015. Muhammadu Buhari is also a retired general of the Nigerian Army and has served as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.
