List of Local Governments in Enugu State. Enugu state is located in the south-eastern part of Nigeria. The state was created in 1991 from part of the old Anambra State. The capital of Enugu state is Enugu city which is also the largest city in the state. Enugu has good soil-land and climatic conditions. It is also the city from which the state derives its name. “Enugu” from the ‘Enu Ugwu’ which means ‘the top of the hill’
HISTORY OF ENUGU
The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1909. A British mining engineer named Albert Kitson discovered coal in the Udi Ridge. This accounts for why the state is regarded as coal city state. As mining activities increased in the area, Enugu acquired township status in 1917 and became even more strategic to British interests. Enugu state has gone from being the capital of the Southern Provinces to becoming the capital of the Eastern Region (which comprises nine States). It also was the capital of the now defunct Federal Republic of Biafra, then the capital of East Central State, Anambra State and currently, the capital of the present Enugu State. Enugu State is located at the foot of the Udi Plateau.

ANINRI
Its headquarters are in the town of Ndeaboh. According to the 2006 census, Aninri has a population of 133,723.
AWGU
Awgu town is the headquarters of Awgu Local Government Area. The Orientation Training Centre for all NYSC (National Youth Service Corps) members posted to Enugu State is located in Agwu town. According to the 2006 census, it has a population of 390,681 people. The major economic activity in Agwu local government is subsistence farming where food crops such as cassava, yam, vegetables, maize, etc. are grown. Other occupations are palm wine extraction and stone quarrying.
EDEM
Edem is sometimes referred to as “Edem Ani. The town is an ancient traditional state located in Nsukka Local Government Area. Edem holds a culturally rich, stable traditional political system with institutions of government that date back to more than 900 years. It is one of the oldest civilisations that was still in existence pre-colonial Nigeria.
ENUGU EAST
Its headquarters are in the town of Nkwo Nike. According to the 2006 census, Edem has a population of 279,089 people.
ENUGU NORTH
Its headquarters are in the city of Enugu. According to the 2006 census, Enugu North has a population of 244,852.
ENUGU SOUTH
Its headquarters are in the town of Uwani. According to the 2006 census, Enugu South has a population of 198,723 people.
EZEAGU
Its headquarters is in the town of Aguobu-Owa. The people of Ezeagu LGA are known for the popular Abacha, which is their most common staple food. Abacha is made from cooked grated cassava. Residents of Ezeagu produce it both in subsistence and commercial quantity.
IGBO ETITI
Igbo Etiti has its headquarters are in the town of Ogbede. According to the 2006 census, Igbo Etiti has a population of 209,248.
IGBO EZE NORTH
This local government shares borders with Kogi State and Benue State. Its headquarters are in the town of Enugu-Ezike. Igbo Eze North is made up of two towns which are Enugu Ezike and Etteh. According to the 2006 census, Igbo Eze North has a population of 259,431. The most widely used language is the Igbo language. However, some minority tribes also speak the Idoma and Igala language.
IGBO EZE SOUTH
This is also called Igboeze South. Its headquarters are in the town of Ibagwa-Aka. The major occupations here are Agriculture and trade. According to the 2006 census, Igbo Eze South has a population of 147,328.
ISI UZO
This local government shares borders with Benue State and Ebonyi State. Its headquarters are in the town of Ikem. The major occupations of natives in Isi Uzo are farming and trading. There are also claims that there are large deposits of crude oil and gas in the area.
MMAKU
Mmaku is one of the towns in the Awgu local government area. Mmaku made up of three other communities, which are: Agunese Mmaku, Mmaku Ugwu and Mmaku Agbo. These are all autonomous communities. Each community has a king, called Igwe who is the head and the chief decision-maker of the community. However, he is assisted by other chiefs. The major occupation of the Mmaku people is Agriculture because Mmaku is surrounded by streams which aids the production of vegetables and tubers.
NKANU EAST
Nkanu East shares borders with Ebonyi State to the east. Its headquarters is located in the town of Amagunze. One of the villages in this local government, Akpawfu is renowned for its traditional masquerade called omaba, farming, special palm wine tapping skills and other types of palm produce such as palm oil, nut and cannel. According to the 2006 census, Nkanu East has a population of 148,774.
NKANU WEST
Its headquarters is situated in the town of Agbani. According to the 2006 census, Nkanu West has a population of 146,695.
NSUKKA
Nsukka is both a town and Local Government Area in in Enugu State. According to the 2006 census, Nsukka has a population of 309,633. The famous University of Nigeria, which is the first indigenous Nigerian university, founded by Late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe is located in Nsukka town. first President of Nigeria. The major ethnic group in Nsukka is the Igbo ethnic group.
OJI RIVER
Oji River is a Local Government Area in Enugu State that shares borders with Anambra and Abia state to its south. According to the 2006 census, Oji River has a population of 126,587.
UDENU
Udenu local government shares borders with Nsukka. According to the 2006 census, Udenu has a population of 178,466.
UDI
Its headquarters is in the town of Udi. According to the 2015 census, Udi has and a population of 370,002.
UNADU
Unadu lies North West of Nsukka. Unadu has many tourist attractions. This is because the community is surrounded by mountains which have water gushing out of them.
UZO-UWANI
Its headquarters is in the town of Umulokpa. According to the 2006 census, Uzo- Uwani has a population of 124,480.
