As at present Nigeria boasts of up to 31 airports all over the 36 states we have in the country though unfortunately not all of them are international airports, we have local airports in Nigeria likewise the Nigeria International Airports though few.

1. Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja

Murtala Mohammed International Airport is an international airport located in Ikeja the capital city of Lagos State and is the most used airport in Nigeria.

Murtala Airport is the busiest and busiest Airport in Nigeria, formerly known as Lagos International Airport, and was later renamed in the 1970s to Murtala Mohammed International Airport to honor the late former Nigerian Military leader “Murtala Mohammed.”

The airport operated both domestic and international flights of which the same runway is being used.

2. Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja

The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is an international airport that was built in the early 2000 and was opened and started operating in 2002.

The airport is located in the Capital City of Nigeria Abuja and is the main airport that serves the whole of Abuja. Just like the Lagos State Airport, Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport also operates both domestic and international flights and it covers approximately 20 KM of land.

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was named after the Nigerian first president. According to the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) the airport annually processed at least 4 million passengers both local and international.

The airport was built to handle up to 11 million passengers yearly if there is a need for that and most of the classic and top Airlines like Lufthansa, Ethiopian Airlines, Air Peace, Air France and many other airlines convey passengers to and fro the airport.

3. Port Harcourt International Airport

The Port Harcourt International Airport is newly built and is located in the capital city of Rivers State. The airport is owned and operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). The airport serves the people of Rivers state and also other neighboring Sout-Southern States.

The Port Harcourt International Airport also operates both domestic and international flights and was recently commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 before it was opened for use.

This airport is filled with new and modern facilities and in 2019 it was able to move over 1.5 million passengers both domestically and Internationally.

4. Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport

The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport is an international airport located in Kano State, Nigeria, and has been the main airport serving the people of Kano State. Mallam Aminu Airport was formerly known as the Royal Airforce station before Nigeria gained its independence in 1960 and was later renamed.

Mallam Aminu International Airport is the oldest airport in Nigeria and also the first airport in Nigeria, it was there where the first plane landed in Nigeria back in the year 1922, though the airport started accepting passengers in 1936.

In 2008, the airport recorded over 500,000 both domestic and international passengers, also one of the few airports that serve general use and also the military flights.

5. Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu

The Akanu Ibiam International Airport is located in Enugu State and is popularly known as the Enugu Airport. It is an international airport that serves Enugu state and other cities like Awka, Onitsha, Abakaliki, Nnewi, Nsukka, Afikpo, Okigwe, Ugep, Orlu, Idah, Otukpo, and Ogojawhich.

Akanu Ibiam International Airport was established in 1976 and so far has been able to handle flights of both local and international effectively.

6. Kaduna International Airport

The Kaduna International Airport was established and officially commissioned in 1982 and is located about 22 kilometers northwest of the city having its first international flight in March 2017.

The airport is operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the airport was recently upgraded in 2017 and now serves both domestic flights and international flights..

7. Asaba International Airport

The Asaba International Airport is an international airport that was established and opened in 2013, it is located in the capital city of Asaba, Delta state Nigeria and it serves Delta state and also Onitsha across the Niger River in Anambra.

The airport was opened with high expectations but over time started deteriorating as it has been temporarily closed and presently needs much intervention from the government.

8. Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri

The Sam Mbakwe Airport unlike others is an international cargo airport which is located in Imo State, Nigeria. It started operation in 1994 under the regime of Navy Captain J.N. Aneke who was the former military administrator.

9. Sultan Abubakar III International Airport Sokoto

Sadiq Abubakar III International Airport or Sultan Saddik Abubakar Airport is an airport serving Sokoto, the capital of the Sokoto State in Nigeria. It is named after Siddiq Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto from 1938 to 1988.
